Fast Food

The original Coney Island Nathan’s  (sorry that I forgot who had hoped for a photo of it – here ya go). It’s 95 years old and open year-round. I was going to take pictures inside but there was a long line AND there was a clearly disturbed or intoxicated man on the corner yelling nonsense at me. I’m a lover, not a fighter (although we did exchange some…….”pleasantries” – New York style!). Not sure why this theme doesn’t seem to let me post hyperlinks properly, so you can find the story of Nathan’s here:

The building in the background is the Shore Theatre from my “retro” post a few days ago.

I have a few more pictures of Nathan’s that I might post at a later date, but I’ll add this one, with the hot dog contest winner’s wall. I have never been to one (I don’t enjoy crowds, and it is PACKED), but I have watched it on ESPN. Joey Chestnut is the current champ, but I like watching Sonya Thomas, aka “The Black Widow”. She only weighs 100 lbs (sometimes less)!

  1. I’m baaack! (Sorry, I hit send too soon. )

If you wouldn’t mind an observation, on the top image I’d crop it a lot tighter vertically. For me, the sky isn’t adding much and I’d rather rather enjoy the funky sign and the building in the background. I’m enjoying your shots a lot, so I hope you don’t mind the comment.

  2. I read Billz comment about cropping, I think you should leave the air, or maybe neither of you have been to a hot dog eating contest, Fresh air is always a premium! LOL

  3. These are wonderful! I love the perspective on the first shot. What does the hot dog guy/gal hold in their left hand? It looks like a camera.

I’m be interested in seeing if you come up with a new crop that you like. I can see both sides of the argument….

  4. I agree with Julie. I love the perspective of the first pic. I like it the way it is but it would be interesting to see it cropped. It’s amazing how a little bit of editing can change a picture so much.
Thanks for all these New York pictures. I’ve never been but plan on making my way there in the near future. It’s great to be able to get a preview through a New Yorker’s eyes.

  5. Don’t crop. I like the sign along with the old porno theater. I wasn’t aware they were across the street from one another. I was the forgotten person who asked for a photo of this place, so thank you.

  6. Interesting walk through Coney Island. Having never been there it is a treat to see the images and hear the stories. If you do a crop, I would like to see the difference in the two versions.

  7. I love the blue sky and the neon colours together. We are losing these idividual areas for a high street of similar multinational shops and fast food joints.
Now a street in Derby looks likee a strreet in London, so sad.
    Thanks for this

  8. Hey Gisele,
Just a quick note to tell you I responded to your question about the light pictures on my blog. Hope the info is helpful.

  9. with your help I can see some places of Brooklyn, never have been there, and I must say, I like what you are telling, sounds exiting and stimulating …

  10. I love the old neon sign. even though hot dogs are no favourite of mine I could try anyway. I like the way you show this side of town . Never been there (or anywhere else in US I’m afraid) but I would very much like to go some time. Until then I enjoy photos in different blogs 🙂
